Marnée Morgan’s 4-week event focuses on financial wellness beyond the pandemic
Marnée Morgan was just about to postpone her annual Elevate conference when she felt the need to pivot and transition to a virtual conference. The St. Louis communications strategist and consultant initially thought people were overwhelmed with live-streamed events for both work and pleasure, but she could not let go of one looming thought. She had to host the event in spite of the pandemic.
She said, “Covid has affected our ability to earn a living, remain employed and diminished our hope. I realized that if I was going through the exact same thing, then I had to offer a conference with solutions.”
To accomplish her goal, Morgan called on a few voices from her community as well as experts with a national platform who spoke about Black generational wealth. And she intentionally chose people like renowned author and activist Jamala Rogers, thought leader Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, and president of Harris-Stowe State University Dr. Corey S. Bradford, Sr. who are also resource-rich to give participants more than a few inspirational words.
“People need actionable steps but they also need to know where to turn for help after a conference. Each one of our speakers is a resource with resources that are accessible to all – beyond the pandemic.”
The first leg of the free conference kicked off on Friday, October 9 and will continue every Friday for the next three weeks. Future topics will cover beginning or restructuring a business, leveraging community organizations for help, and self-reinvestment.
Registration is free for the 2020 Elevate Conference in partnership with Harris-Stowe State University. Sessions begin on Fridays at 8:30AM (CST) and end at 1 PM (CST). The series closes on October 30. All parts of the series are live-streamed via Zoom.
Marnée Morgan is confident that she made the right decision. “This is the time more than ever to restore and renew the hope of our communities as well as within ourselves.”

North St. Louis finally has COVID-19 tests – but now needs PPE
By Rebecca Rivas Of The St. Louis American
CareSTL Health, which operates three testing sites in North St. Louis city, has only a week’s worth of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for employees, said Angela Clabon on Friday, April 17. Its supply orders for masks, gowns and gloves have been delayed, she said.
CareSTL Health just received 1,000 test kits, she said, and its testing supplies are finally where they need to be. The new challenge is acquiring PPE.
“I will not test without PPE supplies,” Clabon said. “I won’t do that to my staff. I have all the powers to be trying to get more – from the governor to the mayor, everyone is working on trying to get more.”
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms (D) is urging city residents to stay at home even as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) plans to reopen the state at the end of the week.
Bottoms told MSNBC’s “MTP Daily” on Tuesday that she recognizes her powers as mayor do not supersede Kemp’s as governor.
“But I do have the power of my voice,” she said. “And I am using my voice to encourage people: Follow the data, look at the science, listen to the health care professionals, and use your common sense.”
